Start with the happy news: Powerpets never died. It's been online since 2002, it survived a ransomware attack on its servers and backups (the recovery notice is still on the homepage — "we've worked hard since to restore everything"), and when we checked today it was simply operating: a $50,000 PB bingo jackpot, the poll booth, the quests, a live ticker of winners. If your hobby is the classic pet-site rounds — dailies here, restocks there, a bingo round somewhere else — this list is the honest map of the class: Subeta, MaraPets, Flight Rising, Neopets, and our own free cozy corner, Petropolis Play, playable on this very page in about a minute. No download, no signup, nothing to install.
Free forever · Nothing to install · No account · Progress saves on your own device.
The lovely surprise of a "games like Powerpets" search: the original is still here — twenty-four years old, recovery notice and all. So the honest move isn't a memorial, it's a nudge: play it, and play the whole class. Our own contribution is embedded below — the complete free version of Petropolis Play, live. Adopt and name your first pet in under 60 seconds, no account needed — and the same game is waiting on the Petropolis Play homepage anytime. (Already doing your rounds elsewhere? We built honest pages for Subeta citizens, MaraPets players, Flight Rising clans and the Goatlings herd too.)

Yes, it's our list and yes, we put ourselves first — so we've printed the yardstick below every pick, re-verified the state of every site today, and printed the catches (aging interfaces, account-first doors, quiet communities) where they belong: right under each name. Check our work.
Best for: pet-site hoppers who want the adopt-care-earn-decorate heart in a five-minute daily — free, no download, no signup
🟢 Free forever, playable right on this page — re-verified live October 3, 2026
Full disclosure first, then the honest line. This is our game — it's why this list exists — and it is not a 2002-scale pet-site universe: there's no eighty-species roster, no sixteen-region world map, no quests, no dojo battling, no auctions or player-run cities, and no forums. What Petropolis Play keeps is the heart that made those sites worth the daily rounds. You adopt somebody who's yours: four species are free today — pup, kitten, bunny and a brand-new sunny turtle — each in their own colors, each waiting for the name you give them. You care for them: feed, play and rest through a gentle daily loop that fits between your other sites' dailies. You dress them up: the shop stocks clothing alongside food and toys, and outfits swap anytime. You decorate: drag-and-drop furniture into a room that's entirely yours, across five themes. And you earn: PawCoins come from minigames like Berry Catch and a daily login bonus — the way the classic sites' games paid for everything — and they can never be bought: there is no premium currency here and no membership tier at all. Then the two promises a twenty-four-year-old genre earned the right to ask for. One: nothing to install and no account — plain HTML in the browser tab you're reading, lovely on phones. Two: your progress saves on your own device — no ransomware notice will ever carry your pet's name, and no parent company can sunset the server they're on. The only purchase is an optional $4.99 one-time Full Version — never a subscription. Don't take our word for it: it's embedded above.
Best for: the real thing — online since 2002, still free, still indie, recovery notice and all
🟢 Still running — re-verified live October 3, 2026 (powerpets.com serving; homepage clock reading 10/3/2026)
The happy exception on this site: most of our 'games like' pages begin with a funeral — this one begins with a survivor. Powerpets has been online since 2002 (the footer reads © 2002–2026), and when we re-fetched it while writing this page, the homepage's own server clock read today's date. The first thing you'll see is the notice, quoted verbatim because it deserves to be: 'Welcome back to POWERPETS. On April 20th, our servers and backup servers were hit with a ransomware attack. We've worked hard since to restore everything.' It doesn't even state the year — which is somehow the most 2002-web detail imaginable — and behind the notice the site is simply operating: a Bingo jackpot sits at $50,000 PB in the news scroller, and a live ticker reports a Scratch 4 Power Mega Winner, Locker Wars scores, a completed Job Cycle and somebody achieving Extreme Elite, all while we watched. Inside, it's the full classic pet-site universe, genuinely built in 2002 and never flattened since: the homepage greets you with 'Select one or more of 80 adoptable pets to aid you in your journeys' — plus blogs for your real-life pets — and the world runs sixteen named regions from North New Barkston to Farnox (there's an Abyss and a Pirate Island), with quests (the Dark Guardian, Judge Dwight, the Zookeeper), restockable shops, an Adoption Center and an Animal Shelter, the Veterinarian, banks, the Job Agency and its Job Cycles, the Armory and King Cobra's Dojo for battle training, Dress Up, Aquariums, farms, the Auction House, the Poll Booth and player-run Power Federation cities. The Animal Shelter still serves from a classic-.asp address, and Ruffle keeps the old Flash content alive. The honest catches, per this page's standing promise: the interface is from 2002 and proud of it — hundreds of text links to learn; everything starts with an account; and the community is a quiet small town now, not the city it was — the ticker is real, but you'll learn the regulars' names. Linked properly below.
⚡ Powerpets — the official site, still running🏠 The Animal Shelter — classic .asp and all
Best for: the deep indie pet economy — pets, restocks, trades, auctions and a wardrobe, run as a labor of love
🟢 Still running — re-verified live October 3, 2026 (subeta.net serving "Subeta — still here, still ours.")
Powerpets' exact class of site: Keith Kurson started Subeta in 2004 — he was 14 at the time, building an answer to the rules Viacom was imposing on Neopets — and he still keeps it going today as a hobby. Sign-up is free, new accounts get 100,000 sP and a starter pet, and inside it's one of the deepest hobby pet sites left: dozens of pet species, games that pay out sP, restockable shops, quests, forums, sMail, trades, auctions, galleries, and a human-avatar wardrobe thousands of items deep with player-designed custom wearables. The honest catches: everything starts with an account; the player economy is a genuine hobby of its own (restocking and trading can feel like a spreadsheet); Cash Shop Credits and an optional Gold Account subscription sit over the best cosmetics; and twenty-two years of accumulated systems take real learning. (We keep a whole honest page on it, linked below.)
Best for: the classic pet-site world map — pets, quests, restocks and collections across Marada
🟢 Still running — re-verified live October 3, 2026 (marapets.com serving "MaraPets - Games")
The exact contemporary: MaraPets has been online since 2004 — free, still running in a plain browser tab, still an indie operation — and it's the closest living neighbor to the Powerpets formula: pets to create and collect, restockable shops, quests, minigames that pay out Marapoints, collections to chase, dailies to run, and the whole world of Marada to wander. If your Powerpets muscle memory is the world map and the shop rounds, Marada will feel like a cousin's house. The honest catches: an account is required from the first minute; the interface is twenty-two years of accumulated layout and takes learning; and the community, like every classic site's, is a quiet small town these days rather than the city it was at its 2000s peak. (More on our honest page for it, linked below.)

Best for: collecting and breeding depth — a dragon clan of your own on Sornieth
🟢 Still running — re-verified live October 3, 2026 (flightrising.com serving "Home | Flight Rising")
The VirtualPetList line this page is built on names Flight Rising in the same breath as Powerpets and Subeta — 'you can play for hours on end' — and it's earned: Stormlight Workshop's browser dragon game launched in 2013 after a Kickstarter and is still actively run. Pick one of eleven elemental Flights, found a clan on the world of Sornieth, breed dragons whose genes pass down to their hatchlings, dress them in apparel, befriend familiars, battle in the Coliseum, earn treasure in the Fairgrounds, trade on the Auction House and exalt dragons to your flight's deity. It's the deepest collect-and-breed loop in the class. The honest catches: new-player registration only opens during announced windows (the famous one — you may have to wait for a door), everything sits behind the account, and the interface shows its thirteen years. (We keep an honest page on it too, linked below.)

Best for: the genre anchor the indie class defined itself against — still free in a browser since 1999
🟢 Still running — online since 1999 (blocks scripted fetches; serving normally to browsers, ©1999–2026)
Every site on this list exists in Neopets' gravity — Subeta was literally founded as an answer to it — and the anchor itself still holds: Neopets launched in 1999, outlived Flash and a parade of owners, and is still free in a real browser tab. Create a Neopet, name it, feed it, play games for Neopoints, run the dailies and explore a whole planet — now under World of Neopia, Inc., which has been actively rebuilding the site, including restoring classic games. (It blocks scripted fetches like ours behind its bot wall, so we verified it the way its players see it: serving normally in a browser, ©1999–2026 in the footer.) The honest catches: everything starts with an account, a premium currency (Neocash) sits over much of the customization, and it's a quarter-century of accumulated interface — even deeper water than Powerpets'. (More on our honest pages for it, linked below.)
The classic pet site was never one feature — it was a rhythm: a pet that's yours, a world with daily rounds, coins earned by playing, and a quiet faith that it'll all still be there tomorrow (a faith Powerpets itself got to test one April 20th). Whatever you try from this list, these are the four things that made the class special, and the four things we checked for.
Powerpets opens with eighty adoptable pets waiting for a name — the whole genre starts from that one small ceremony. Any game on a 'like Powerpets' list has to give you somebody who's yours: a species you pick, a look you choose, a name you gave them — never a preset off a rack.
The classic pet-site rhythm is a route: check the shop restocks, run a quest, play the bingo round, vote at the poll booth, do the dailies — then hop to the next site and do it again. We checked for a loop that earns its place in your daily rounds, not a one-weekend novelty.
The genre's honest core: minigames and dailies pay for the food, the toys and the furniture, and the wallet was never supposed to be the point. Every pick here is graded on whether playing — not paying — is still the main road to nice things.
Powerpets got hit with ransomware — servers and backups both — and stood back up. That's the bar now: ask of every site on this list what happens to your pet when something breaks. (Our own answer: progress saves on your device, so no server can take them.)
"Like Powerpets" can mean the whole 2002 universe — eighty pets, sixteen regions, quests, the dojo, auctions, player cities — or just the feeling at the center of it: somebody who's yours, a gentle daily loop, coins earned by playing, a shop to browse and a room to make your own. Here's exactly what it means at Petropolis Play— and, just as honestly, what it doesn't.
Four friends are free to adopt today — including the brand-new Sunny Turtle. Six more, like the very relaxed Breezy Sloth and one very small, very polite dragon, move in with the one-time Full Version.
Splashes in every puddle, then naps like a champion.
Professional sunbeam chaser and part-time yarn critic.
Bounces first, asks questions later.
Clever, quick, and secretly very cuddly.
Snack enthusiast. Napping professional.
Waddles with purpose. Loves a good slide.
Tiny flames, enormous heart.
Leaves a trail of sparkles wherever she trots.
Slow to the pool, first in line for a snack.
Hangs around all summer. Literally.
The classic pet site asks three quiet prices, and Powerpets's own homepage tells the story of all three: the account before anything else, an interface from 2002 you learn like a language, and the knowledge that everything lives on somebody else's server — the same servers and backups that got hit one April 20th, with the recovery notice still pinned to the top of the page. Petropolis Play's core loop — adopting, dressing up, caring, earning and decorating — is permanently free; the room is furnished with PawCoins you win by playing (never bought); the game is plain HTML in any browser tab, so there is nothing to install and no account to create; and your progress saves on your own device, not on a server that can get hit, get sunset or get sold. The one optional purchase is a single $4.99 Full Version. Once — then it's yours.
Since 2002 still serving — recovery notice and all
$0 forever — really
Yes — and after writing memorial pages for so many dead virtual worlds, it's a genuine pleasure to say so. Powerpets has been online since 2002 and is still running today: when we re-fetched powerpets.com while writing this page (October 3, 2026), the homepage's own server clock read today's date, a Bingo jackpot sat at $50,000 PB in the news scroller, the Poll Booth and the rest of the world were linked and live, and the activity ticker was reporting a Scratch 4 Power Mega Winner, Locker Wars scores, a completed Job Cycle and a player achieving Extreme Elite — all in real time. The footer reads © 2002–2026, and the homepage still greets visitors with 'Select one or more of 80 adoptable pets to aid you in your journeys.' You will also see a recovery notice about a ransomware attack at the top of the homepage — that's real too, and the next answer covers it honestly. The six picks above are the map of the class Powerpets belongs to — starting with the one playable on this page.
Exactly what the homepage says, quoted verbatim because the site earned the right to tell it in its own words: 'Welcome back to POWERPETS. On April 20th, our servers and backup servers were hit with a ransomware attack. We've worked hard since to restore everything. Check out the news for more updates, including a (long) list of things we are working on.' The notice doesn't even state the year — which is somehow the most 2002-web detail imaginable — and the important part is what we verified around it today: the site is operating. The bingo jackpot is up, the ticker is moving, the quests and shops are linked and serving, and the © 2002–2026 footer is current. The honest read: a twenty-four-year-old indie pet site got knocked down — servers and backups both — and stood back up. That's worth celebrating, and it's also the gentle warning this page keeps repeating: anything living only on somebody else's server is one bad April 20th away from a notice like that. It's why our own pick saves your progress on your own device.
Depends which part you love — so here it is honestly. If it's the classic indie pet-site universe — pets, quests, restocks, a world map: Powerpets itself is still running (linked above), and Subeta and MaraPets are its living contemporaries, both online since 2004. If it's collecting and breeding depth: Flight Rising, Stormlight Workshop's dragon world, still actively run since 2013 (registration opens in announced windows). If it's the genre anchor the whole class defined itself against: Neopets, still free in a browser since 1999. The class did take one loss recently: Goatlings, the beloved browser goat-pet site, closed around New Year 2026 and its domain no longer resolves — we keep an honest memorial page for the herd, linked below. And if what you actually want is the heart of it all — adopt and name a pet, gentle daily care, coins earned by playing, a shop to browse and a room to decorate, with no account, no download and no learning curve: that's Petropolis Play, our own free cozy browser pet game, playable right here. The list above walks through each honestly, catches included.
Genuinely yes — smaller, quieter, and stubbornly alive. The evidence, all checkable: Powerpets (2002), Subeta (2004), MaraPets (2004), Flight Rising (2013) and Neopets (1999) were all serving when we verified this page on October 3, 2026. VirtualPetList's community ranked the class in one breath in January 2024 — 'Flight Rising, Powerpets and Subeta are all just as big as Marapets and Neopets… you can play for hours on end' — and zen-labo's 'Virtual Pet Sites Worth Your Time in 2026' (published June 2026, updated September 2026) documents the still-living ecosystem site by site. The honest texture: these are no longer the crowded cities of 2007 — they're quiet small towns kept running by people who love them, and the players who remain hop between them: dailies on one, restocks on another, a bingo round on a third. If that rhythm is your hobby, this whole page is built for you — and our own pick is the five-minute version that needs no account at all.
Yes — one honest answer. Petropolis Play, our own game, is embedded on this very page: the complete free version runs in any browser tab on a phone or laptop, with no download, no account and no sign-up — you can be adopting your first pet within the minute, and your progress saves on your own device. Every classic pick on this list asks for an account first: Powerpets, Subeta, MaraPets, Flight Rising and Neopets all start with registration (free, but a form) — and Flight Rising adds its famous wrinkle, registration windows that only open when announced. If you want the adopt-care-earn-decorate ritual as a five-minute daily that asks nothing of you, start with pick #1 above.
No. Petropolis Play is an independent game and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Powerpets, Subeta, Keith Kurson, MaraPets, Flight Rising, Stormlight Workshop, Neopets, World of Neopia Inc., or Goatlings — or their respective owners. All trademarks belong to their respective owners — we just grew up hopping between indie pet sites too, and built a free, browser-based cozy pet world of our own.
Same free game, same cozy promise — we built a page for every side of the playground.
Free forever. No download, nothing to install, no account, no membership, no premium currency — just a pet who's very happy to see you, saved on your own device where no April 20th can reach them.
